Social Comparison and Identity

Vitamodo School · Bundle 10: Children and Information Hygiene · Brochure 7 of 10 · Version 1.0

Andris Saulitis, MD

For those who: have noticed that the social-media engagement of the adolescent is not merely a hobby they have but the substrate the identity is forming in — the comparison-targets the feed selects, the identity-content the platform supplies, the validation-metric the engagement registers continuously — and who want the substantive procedure for ensuring the substrate the adolescent identity actually forms in across the developmental window is not only the engineered comparison the design supplies.

Not for those who: are confronting the bundle's foundation for the first time. Read 10.1–10.6 first; this brochure is a specific-pattern application that rests on the foundation, the distinction, the hero method, and the prior specific-pattern brochures the bundle has already established.

What this is — the clinical reality

This is the seventh brochure of Bundle 10. The earlier brochures established the foundation, the reader-vs-consumer distinction, the three-pencils method, and the specific-pattern brochures on the algorithmic feed, sleep, and gaming. This brochure addresses the highest-stakes remaining adolescent territory: identity-formation, and what social-media comparison provides instead of the substantive identity work the developmental period is for. The identity that forms in adolescence is the identity the adult will operate from for decades; the substrate the identity forms in is the substantive territory the brochure addresses.

The brochure is for the parent of the adolescent — and the parent of the pre-adolescent who is about to become one — who has noticed that the social-media engagement is not merely a hobby the child has; it is the substrate the child is becoming themselves in. The hours spent in the feed are not idle hours; they are identity-formation hours, conducted under the engineered conditions the feed supplies. The comparison-targets the feed selects, the identity-content the platform supplies, the performance-feedback the validation-metrics provide — these are not background to the identity work; they are the substrate the identity work is being done in.

A note on substrate before we go further. The identity-comparison-and-social-media territory has, unlike the prior several Bundle 10 brochures, substantial published-book substrate to draw on. «Psychological Violence» contains the dedicated chapter «Not Friends — Allies» that names the central relational substrate the brochure rests on, the ally-rule that operationalises the distinction, and the relational-rupture passage that names the position on relationship endings. «Three Pencils. Extension» contains the «I-am» passage that grounds what identity-without-external-supply substantively is — the substrate that survives the removal of all the roles, the substrate the parental work for identity-formation rests on. «Above the Clouds There Is Always Sun» provides, again, the environment-as-active-participant substrate the bundle has been built on. The spoken material supplements — the self-evaluation lectures, the publicity-versus-substantive-presence reframe, the parental-modelling treatment — but the published-book substrate carries the brochure's spine.
