Addiction

Vitamodo School · Bundle 11: Disorder Theory · Brochure 8 of 10 · Version 1.0

Andris Saulitis, MD

For those who: have — in their own life, in someone they love, in clinical practice — encountered the territory where the word «addiction» is doing two different jobs (substrate-addiction with substrate the substance has organised around; addiction-as-coping with substantive primary-suffering the response is using the substance to drown), and who want the substantive procedure for distinguishing which one is in front of them and what substantive treatment each requires.

Not for those who: are in acute medical crisis from substance use, attempting cold-turkey withdrawal from alcohol/benzodiazepines/opioids without medical supervision, or pursuing self-administration of new-medicine protocols. The substantive precondition for those situations is acute clinical engagement, not brochure-work.

What this is — the clinical reality

This is the eighth brochure of Bundle 11. The earlier specific-pattern brochures applied the substrate-vs-response distinction to depression, anxiety, bipolar, and trauma. This brochure applies the same distinction to addiction — the territory where Konets epokhi tabletok was substantively written for and where the primary-suffering framing operationalises the response-addiction frame at its clearest form. The brochure mirrors the structure of 11.4 through 11.7 because the procedure mirrors them: same foundation, same hero method, applied here to the substance or behaviour pattern.

The brochure is for the reader who has — in their own life, in someone they love, in clinical practice — encountered the territory where the word «addiction» is doing two substantively different jobs. The addiction with substrate the substantive substance has substantively organised around — the alcohol substrate that has trained the dopamine-reward system, the opioid pattern that has substantively rewritten the substantive reward-baseline, the behavioural addiction (gambling, gaming, compulsive use) that operates on the same substrate by different mechanism. And the addiction as coping — the substance or behaviour that is doing substantive work the substantive response is using as the cope — the alcohol that is substantively drowning the anxiety, the opioid that is substantively numbing the trauma, the gambling that is substantively filling the depression. Konets epokhi tabletok names the relationship directly in the primary-suffering passage: behind every severe addiction there is primary suffering — unprocessed trauma, chronically untreated ADHD, anxiety disorder which the person drowns with alcohol, depression which he drowns with stimulants, borderline personality disorder which he drowns with whatever falls to hand; if you remove the primary cause, the addiction falls away; if you do not remove it, the person returns.

A note on substrate before we go further. Konets epokhi tabletok is the book that addiction is substantively written for in this corpus. The dedicated Chapter 10 «Зависимости: опиоиды, алкоголь, никотин, сахар» names the territory directly. The Vitamodo Institute framing — «addiction is not [an illness in itself]; the twelve-steps and replacement-therapy and social-services infrastructure feeds on the idea of chronicity; if you say addiction is secondary, the whole infrastructure hangs in the air; but this is true» — operationalises the substrate-vs-response distinction at its most direct form. The new-medicine protocols (psilocybin for alcohol, ibogaine for opioids) are the substantive contemporary substrate-treatment option, with the 60-100% remission figures in proper clinical context that the book substantively documents. «Psychosomatics Without Esotericism» supplies the substrate-disorder framework cross-cited from 11.2/11.4/11.5/11.7. «Three Pencils. Extension» supplies the three-pencils method cross-cited from 11.3. The spoken material — Andris's alcoholism lectures, the «алкоголиками не становятся, рождаются» 10%-genetic-vulnerability framing, the «bad habits are just disorders not willpower» passage, the dopamine-reward mechanism — supplements but does not replace the published book substrate.
