When Thoughts Stop Being Checked: The Method’s View of Suicidal Crisis
Extended edition: deeper, with a practical breakdown.
In severe states, dark thoughts feel like the objective truth about yourself and your life. The method sees it differently: the suffering is real, but the content of crisis thoughts is not a verdict — it is a breakdown of checking. This text is about why this happens, and why reaching out for help makes sense precisely now.
Thoughts are streams of associations that must be checked
The doctor describes a thought not as a fact, but as a stream of associations. Healthy thinking constantly performs a logical check of these streams: are they connected, do they lead to sound conclusions. In a crisis this checking weakens or shuts off — and heavy thoughts pass through "unfiltered," perceived as pure truth about yourself.
"Thoughts are streams of associations that must be checked."
A breakdown of critical thinking
The method’s central idea is critical thinking: the capacity to evaluate and to run a logical check. When it is impaired, a person loses the ability to doubt even the darkest thought. This is why in a crisis it is so hard to "just think differently" — the very instrument of evaluation is damaged.
Confusing the levels
The doctor explains: just as water exists in solid, liquid, and gas forms, reality has different levels. Trouble begins when the laws of one level are applied to another — for example, when the laws of a dream are carried into waking reality. In a crisis, a subjective experience ("I am worthless," "nothing will work out") is taken as an objective fact, measurable and final. That is confusing the levels: an inner feeling is mistaken for a verdict about reality.
The delusion of low self-worth and the loop of thoughts
According to the doctor, behind the words "I have problems," "they will laugh at me," "I won’t cope" there is often a fixed storyline lodged in the head — a theme around which thoughts spin. The harder they spin, the higher the anxiety, and the more convincing the darkest conclusion seems. This is not a reflection of your worth — it is a stuck mechanism at work.
"There’s a delusion sitting there that you won’t cope, that you’re worthless."
Why you should not stay alone with this
When critical checking is shut off, you cannot verify the thoughts from inside on your own — you need a view from outside. That is why, in an acute state, the method speaks of restoring normal homeostasis, with medical help if needed, and only then gradually taking control over the streams of thoughts. Loved ones and a specialist become the "external check" you are missing right now.
Practice
Steps for a surge of heavy thoughts (when you have strength and are safe):
- Say aloud: "This is a thought — a stream of associations, not a fact about me."
- Ask: "Am I confusing the levels — taking a subjective feeling as objective truth?"
- Write the thought on paper — get it outside so you can look at it from a distance.
- Don’t check the thought alone — call a loved one or a specialist for an "external check."
- If the state is acute — don’t delay reaching out for help.
Where to get help
If your state is acute and the thoughts become unbearable — reach out immediately: to a specialist or an emergency helpline. In Russia — 112. This is not weakness, but exactly the step of external checking that matters most right now.
Educational material. Not a diagnosis or a substitute for an in-person consultation; in an acute state, seek a doctor (emergency — 112).
