Health anxiety rarely comes out of nowhere. Behind constant body-scanning, checking and searching for hidden danger there is usually not the illness itself, but fear and anxiety the person doesn’t always recognize. The VitaModo method suggests not arguing with these thoughts head-on, but looking at their root: what exactly broke in the “engine” that is meant to deliver healthy energy.

The engine and its breakdown

The doctor compares the psyche to an engine: when it works, it “delivers healthy energy,” and a person acts naturally. When the engine is broken, the energy doesn’t flow, and instead of movement there is endless “preparation”: plans, mental looping, checking. Health anxiety is one of the ways a person fills this standstill — instead of taking the first step.

Where to look for the cause: the body and homeostasis

Before calling everything “purely psychological,” the method insists on looking at the body. Anxious depression and panic can have an organic basis: “maybe you need to check the thyroid,” something is missing somewhere, the brain “isn’t fully working.” So the doctor starts with basic questions: what is your food like, how do you sleep, do you walk, is your homeostasis in order. This is the foundation — without it, any psychological explanation hangs in the air.

Fear wearing the mask of health concern

Behind health anxiety there is often a deeper fear: fear of death, fear of failure, fear of “letting go.” The doctor describes a typical trap: “if I let go of everything now — something will happen right away,” as if releasing the brake would make “the car explode.” In this logic, constant control over the body feels like the only thing holding off catastrophe. But it is exactly this control that keeps the person tense.

When preparation crowds out action

In anxious depression all the energy goes “there” — into plans and preparation. The person takes a first little step, a second — “oops, and it’s the same thing again.” Health anxiety fits perfectly into this pattern: you can endlessly study symptoms, read, check — and it creates an illusion of activity without result. The doctor stresses: once the cause is removed, action takes first place, while plans and preparation drop to “sixth or seventh place.”

Breaking the trance of anxiety

The doctor states plainly that his job is to “de-hypnotize”: to break the trance in which fear passes itself off as reality. Health anxiety is a form of this hypnosis, where the feeling “something is wrong with me” sounds more convincing than any facts. The way out is not another check-up, but a return to simple things: to the body, to routine, to the first real step.

Practice: get the engine running again

  1. Check the foundation. Honestly look at how you eat, how you sleep, whether you walk. This is the base of homeostasis where everything starts.
  2. Rule out the somatic. If anxiety persists, consider that the cause may be physical (e.g., the thyroid) and discuss it with a specialist, not a search engine.
  3. Name the fear. Ask yourself: what am I really afraid of — death, failure, loss of control? Health anxiety often covers exactly that.
  4. Take the first step. Not a plan, not preparation — one small real action. Notice how your energy shifts.
  5. Start from zero every morning. In the evening tell yourself, “I did what I could,” and in the morning get up and see “what life gives you” — this loosens the grip of control.
