Extended edition: deeper, with a practical breakdown.

Gaslighting is not an accident, and it is not your fault. It is a technique of influence with a clear mechanism. Dr. Saulitis describes exactly how it "enters" a person and why it works — so that you can recognize the strike the moment it happens and not hand over control of yourself.

How the strike begins

Gaslighting starts with a substitution: someone feeds you their version of reality and nudges you to accept it. These are the "tellers" — people who twist words and facts so that you start to doubt yourself. According to the doctor, it comes "like a thrust of a pike": sudden, precise, and it instantly throws you off balance.

"It comes like a thrust of a pike, it hits at once, and at once a reactive point appears in you."

At that moment the reactive system switches on: homeostasis is knocked out, the nervous system flips into reactive mode. And you end up paralyzed — "your head goes completely foggy."

The main target — breaking the "king in the head"

In the method, the first and main step of any manipulation is to break your inner "king." What does that mean? As long as you yourself evaluate, measure, ask and find out — you remain immune to influence.

"As long as you evaluate, as long as you measure for yourself, as long as you ask and find out — you are the one who hypnotizes and sets the tone."

But if you only react and don't make your own decisions — you become prey. The manipulator's tricks (questions you agree to step by step) exist precisely to switch off your ability to judge for yourself.

Why it "lodges" in the head

Suggestion coming from toxic people lodges in the brain — whether you want it or not. It activates the reactive system and knocks you off your wave entirely. It is especially hard when your defenses are already weakened: when you are tired, when your energy drops — that is exactly when the thoughts that "have gaslit us all our lives" crawl out. The inner memory itself starts to gaslight. So understand this: vulnerability rises not from your weakness, but from a drop in form.

Where it shows up

Gaslighting is not only about one "bad person." It can come from a cult, a state, a husband, a wife. When they start "putting you on trial" — where and when you were born, your nationality, your religion — and run down the whole list, it is the same technique. The goal is one: to make you justify yourself and doubt who you are.

Almost everyone fears ending up in such a situation, wondering what mistake to avoid. But it is not about the mistake — it is about recognizing the strike and refusing to buy it.

Practice: how not to hand over control

  1. Recognize the type, don't dig in. Once you spot the maneuver — "we recognize it right away, it's this type, and that's it." Don't share, don't explain yourself, don't get drawn in — "don't buy it."
  2. Mark it in the moment of the strike. The doctor suggests a sharp inner marker: the moment the influence begins — name it as a contamination and refuse it. "Not buying. Why would I need this?" This stops the suggestion before it "lodges."
  3. Time-out and state. When it floods over you — "Andris, that's it, time-out, rest, rest, rest." Only your state will pull you out, otherwise "you drown." Restore your wave before deciding anything.
  4. Keep the king in your head. Keep evaluating, asking, measuring for yourself. As long as you judge for yourself, you stay immune to hypnosis.
  5. First tell the intent apart. Not everything is gaslighting: sometimes a loved one is simply worried about you. It's worth looking — is it foolishness, care, or intent — and not getting worked up for nothing.

Educational material. Not a diagnosis or a substitute for an in-person consultation; in an acute state, seek a doctor (emergency — 112).
