Adult children and aging parents often spend years "holding on" — avoiding specialists, looking for advice online or from friends. But some conditions become far more costly the longer help is delayed.

When the Body Says "Stop"

One of the clearest signals is a physical response to ordinary situations. Dr. Saulitis describes it this way: the moment a person tries to start something, their hands drop, their mind goes blank. In more severe cases, legs give way, the room spins, nausea or vomiting sets in, or the person loses consciousness altogether. This is not a weakness of character — it is the nervous system signalling that it has reached a critical load. When the body reacts this intensely, self-help alone is no longer enough.

When "Broken" Spreads Everywhere

Another key indicator is the scope of the disruption. As Dr. Saulitis observes: if something breaks a person in one area — at work, at home, in a relationship — it immediately spreads to every other area of life. Everything starts to feel damaged and distorted. If you notice that anxiety, apathy, or a sense of helplessness are no longer tied to a specific situation but have seeped into your life as a whole, that is a signal to seek professional help — not simply to rest.

Choosing a Specialist Consciously

Dr. Saulitis cautions that consulting specialists without any understanding of the situation can do harm — especially when family conflicts or children are involved. The clearer your own understanding of the problem, the better equipped you are to judge whether a given specialist is helping or "talking nonsense." Knowledge does not replace help — it helps you find the right help.

The Rule: Do Not Allow Yourself to Be Broken Longer Than Necessary

The longer a person remains in a situation where they are broken down — coerced, psychologically violated, forced to act against themselves — the more deeply the protective shutdown responses become entrenched. After three or more decades of such patterns, balance is possible, but full change is extremely difficult. That is precisely why seeking a specialist should not be postponed: the earlier you act, the more room there is for recovery.

Educational material. Not a diagnosis or a substitute for an in-person consultation; in an acute state, seek a doctor (emergency — 112).
