Why the Nervous System Weakens Under Alcohol: The Method’s View on GABA, Neuronal Energy and Neuroplasticity

When we ask «why does this happen», Dr. Saulitis’s method looks not at the symptom but at the mechanism. The nervous system is described as fine wiring with insulation, carrying electricity. Alcohol «erodes» that wiring — and fine innervation breaks down. If we can see this in the legs as polyneuropathy, we should consider that the same is happening in the brain.
The wiring that alcohol erodes
Polyneuropathy is a vivid example. The doctor compares nerves to electrical wiring: there are layers of insulation, an impulse runs through. Alcohol disrupts fine innervation, and a person starts «waddling like a duck», walking with a cane. The central idea is the inhibitory GABA system. It is a «buffer» that processes a stimulus before it reaches the executive functions and the amygdala. A door slams — the system decides: this is not a bomb, no need to react, the impulse can be sent into neutral noise. When this buffer is missing, the impulse strikes the executive brain directly: the person reacts, runs, gets irritable. Alcohol substitutes for the GABA system. And when alcohol is withdrawn, «there’s no GABA, and the substitute is gone» — hence the withdrawal: shaking in the morning, swaying in the evening.

Why stabilization matters, not endless «detox»
The method criticizes endless «detoxes» as a waste of people’s money and nerves. When the cause is clear, actions are built step by step. Then it becomes possible not only to get through the period of alcohol withdrawal, but also to stabilize the very mental disorder the person was, in effect, «treating» with alcohol.
