Self-improvement work has its place. But there are situations where starting without a doctor is like training on a broken leg before it has been set in plaster.

Diagnosis First — Everything Else Comes After

Dr. Saулitis is clear: without understanding what is happening in the brain and its neurons, any attempt to "treat something" is pointless. A diagnosis is always established by a qualified physician. Only then does it become clear what state the brain is in, why it is functioning the way it is — and what actually needs to happen next.

The same outward picture — anxiety, fatigue, memory problems, difficulty concentrating — can have fundamentally different causes: burnout, age-related changes, attention deficits, chronic stress. Treatment must target the cause, and that cause cannot be identified without a specialist.

Why a Psychologist or Coach Cannot Replace a Psychiatrist

Psychologists and psychotherapists work with behaviour and thinking. That is valuable — but only when the brain is capable of receiving information and changing. If neuroplasticity is impaired, if a person is overwhelmed by intrusive thoughts and anxiety, talking therapies will not produce results: the "hardware" is simply not ready to do the work.

A psychiatrist looks at neurotransmitter function and how the brain is operating — something other specialists do not assess. That is precisely why certain conditions require psychiatric care specifically.

Signs That It Is Time to See a Psychiatrist

  • Anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or low mood do not resolve despite rest and efforts to "pull yourself together"
  • Psychological therapy or counselling has produced no meaningful effect over an extended period
  • Problems with sleep, memory, or concentration are interfering with everyday life
  • A sense that the brain "cannot cope" with the flow of information and stimulation

In these situations, homeostasis needs to be restored first — and only then can progress be made. That is exactly what psychiatric care is for.

How to Find the Right Specialist

Working with a multidisciplinary team is now standard practice. But the starting point should be a consultation with a psychiatrist: it gives a clear picture of your actual condition and makes it possible to map out the right path forward. Without that understanding, every next step is taken in the dark.

Educational material. Not a diagnosis or a substitute for an in-person consultation; in an acute state, seek a doctor (emergency — 112).
