Body Dysmorphic Disorder: When to Seek a Specialist

Dissatisfaction with one's appearance is common — a nose that feels wrong, crooked knees, a body that seems somehow off. On its own, this is not yet an illness. But when such thoughts become constant and begin to control a person's life, a mental disorder may be at play — one that calls for professional help.

When It Goes Beyond Ordinary Dissatisfaction

The key sign is that the preoccupation becomes intrusive and resistant to correction. A person can be reasoned with, shown evidence, shown their reflection — yet they remain firmly convinced of their "defect." This quality of thinking is itself a symptom, not simply a personality trait or stubbornness.

Particular attention is warranted when depression develops alongside body dissatisfaction. Dr. Saулitis draws special attention to adolescence: at ages 14–15, depressive states, bipolar affective disorder, and even early signs of psychotic episodes may emerge for the first time — and all of these can present disguised as dissatisfaction with one's body or appearance.

Warning Signs That Call for a Specialist

  • Thoughts about one's body occupy a significant part of the day and cannot be redirected
  • Persistent low mood, anxiety, or social withdrawal develops
  • The person begins avoiding everyday situations out of shame about their appearance
  • The idea of physically altering the body feels like the only possible solution
  • Symptoms appear in an adolescent alongside mood swings or behavioural disturbances

If suicidal thoughts are present, there is a risk to others, or the person is in a state of complete helplessness — help is needed immediately.

Who to See and What to Ask

The first step is a consultation with a psychiatrist or psychotherapist. Before beginning any treatment, Dr. Saулitis recommends asking the specialist directly: what is the treatment plan, and what method will be used? If there is no clear answer, it is worth looking for another professional. It is also important to understand that the symptom itself is not what is treated — the underlying cause is. Just as breathlessness is treated through the heart or lungs rather than the breath itself, dissatisfaction with the body subsides once its root cause is addressed.

Educational material. Not a diagnosis or a substitute for an in-person consultation; in an acute state, seek a doctor (emergency — 112).
